Colors are pretty rich and the quality is pretty good as well. I’ve been using the pink and sage ones since and they’re a perfect way to “cap” off my witch girl board and numpad! I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on them, great textile feel, and wonderful thonk when used.

We focused on pre-built models here, but that doesn’t mean customization isn’t important. Experimenting with different switches and keycaps is half the fun of this hobby, after all. For this guide, we prioritized keyboards that are “hot-swappable,” which means they let you easily remove and replace switches without having to desolder anything. Permanently attached switches may be more stable, but fixing a broken hot-swappable switch should be relatively painless — and more affordable to boot. Most importantly, it covered many of the aspects that seperate standard mechanical keyboards from their "ergonomic" counterparts.

The above mish-mosh of switches was just a layout we did just for fun, though. Ultimately, we settled on a set of Drop Holy Panda X switches for the final build, needing a total of 83 switches for the 83 keys. If that’s too expensive, neoprene is another excellent option. I use two layers of colored craft neoprene I purchased from my local craft store, but you can also buy it in larger, thicker sheets for easier application. The idea is to fill the empty space with a material that is dense enough to absorb unwanted frequencies.

The important thing is that every pin you touch, with the exception of specialized keys like Fn, cause a reaction on the testing tool. If they do not, contact the manufacturer because the PCB may be faulty. Before proceeding, you should first make sure your PCB works as intended. Unpack your PCB, and plug it into your PC using a matching USB cable. Be careful not to touch the board to anything that could cause a short, like a metal keyboard case. ABS is common on both very high-end and very low-end keycaps and can vary widely in quality.

It would be difficult to explain all of the differences in this build guide. Acrylic cases are perfect for someone who enjoys a lightshow every time they turn their keyboard on, but keep in mind, they tend to more fragile and flexible than other material types. A plastic case is perfect for those on a budget or who prefer a keyboard that is lighter and easier to take on the go.

You can also open up your favorite text editor and create your-keyboard-name.yaml. (It's alright, I can give you a minute to think a good name for your new board.) Even if you're going to use the web versions, it's a good idea to save your files offline when you're done tweaking it. The web page will try to keep your edits stored locall in your browser, but you never want to lose hours of work if something goes wrong.

This site lets you paste in an Ergogen config file and then download the generated outputs right from your browser. Ergogen community member Cache has done an excellent job of adding live previews to ergogen.cache.works, letting you quickly itterate through layouts during the early parts of your design process. This site has been updated to Ergogen v4, so even longtime Ergogen enthusiasts are starting to make the pivot to the new syntax changes. You give it a config file describing a keyboard, and it will output a trace-less PCB file and some .dxf / .stl files you can use to get started when creating a case. Ergogen is designed to get you out of graphical CAD tools and fiddly alignment controls, letting you focus on parametrically defining a keyboard layout down to the last millimeter.

Maybe the best thing about the Air V2 is just how cute it is. Its rounded keycaps, trim side lights and accented enter key and space bar give it a playful air. Those side lights are a slick way to display caps lock and battery status, while the case as a whole is made from a chilly aluminum that only flexes if you push down hard. The back is plastic, but it has a stylish transparent finish and two adjustable feet.

While this keyboard uses QMK, not all of them do, and some might have proprietary utilities. It's important to do your research and figure out what software you'll need to control your keyboard. Once all switches are functioning as intended, you can move on to installing the keycaps.

Good backlighting will make any keyboard easier to use in the dark. We gave bonus points to keyboards with fully programmable RGB lights, as they can be particularly fun to mess with, but they're not essential. As noted above, the strength of your backlight will be neutered if your keycaps’ legends aren’t transparent. It’s a plus if a keyboard works across multiple operating systems, particularly Windows and macOS, just in case you ever switch allegiances. If the device comes with OS-specific keycaps you can pop on to make the experience less clunky, that’s even better. Keyboard makers have several different methods of printing the letters and symbols (aka “legends”) that go on a set of keycaps.

The Inland Gaming MK we're using is a barebones 75% kit with a frame made of aluminum. The frame features a plastic cutout for passing through RGB backlighting from the pre-installed PCB along the sides. The image below shows the various layers and parts of the board. If your keyboard supports VIA, I highly suggest downloading the application and using it. VIA is based on QMK, so it retains extensive levels of programmability using an intuitive graphical interface but updates the keyboard in real time, so no flashing is necessary. If your keyboard is hot-swappable, simply pull the key out, straighten the pin with your tweezers and re-install.

There are different plate material types such as aluminum, steel, brass, carbon fiber, and more. The most common mounting style is tray mount, as it’s the cheapest and easiest to manufacture. Some of the different mounting styles include tray mount, top mount, bottom mount, sandwich mount, plateless mount, integrated plate, and gasket mount. The quality of the case ranges depending on the grade of aluminum and how precisely the cases were manufactured when built.

Add more solder if necessary or remove the switch, and try again. Be careful to remove all of the current solder before attempting to pull the switch out and not to damage the solder pad. Now that the case is back together, the only thing left to do is install your keycaps. Again, be sure to note any fastening points or quirks of your case. Then, touch the iron to the contact pad and pin, and allow them to warm up for several seconds before adding solder. Warm up the soldering iron to approximately 380 degrees Celsius (716 degrees Fahrenheit).

If the PCB and plate can be assembled and installed as a whole unit, complete the next step outside of the case. Look closely at the fastening points on the case, PCB, and plate to determine which matches your keyboard. Unless the PCB needs to be fastened separate from the plate, it's likely that you can save installation for Step 9.
